Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering is an area of applied science which contributes greatly to the nation and humanity. Also, it's an advanced specialty of Harbin Engineering University. With the speed-up of world economic integration, the need for bilingual translation of marine engineering documents becomes greater. This thesis is a case study based on a Chinese-English translation project of a dissertation of Doctor of Engineering, Prototype Development and Experiment Study on Double Articulated Mating Skirts of Submersible. It mainly involves the technologies and device development of underwater mating, which has great theoretical significance and practical value. In this case study, the linguistic features and translation strategies of marine engineering documents were discussed. Marine engineering documents have same basic characteristics of scientific documents as well as their own special characteristics. Analysis based on the translation project showed that this marine engineering document has basic characteristics of scientific documents such as strong technicality, usages of long sentences and nominalizing structures, and good logicality etc.; also it has special characteristics of its own area such as marine technical terms and very high comprehensiveness.According to the characteristics, possible strategies in C-E translation of marine engineering documents were discussed using examples from the translation project. Strategies like back translation, borrowing, image translation, division and combination etc. were put forward and discussed, with actual examples from the project explaining the strategies'application.
