The translation project is based on the Big Book of Bicycling—Everything You Need to Know.Bicycling,as a green way of travel and healthy life style,is becoming a trend day by day.Whether it's for individual leisure or professional competition, cycling has a large number of participants and practitioners. So this English-Chinese translation project not only caters to the needs of the times, but also meets the demands of people in the society. The translated Chinese text of the practical popular science text can provide readers with more comprehensive knowledge and operational guidance for riding. This translation task adopts Nida's functional equivalence as the main theoretical basis. In addition, the translator analyzes and solves the translation problems from the perspective of pragmatics such as context and connotation. For the lexical meaning equivalence, syntactical meaning equivalence and textual equivalence, the translator discusses the application of equivalence theory in popular science texts of sports. In the process of translation, the translator employs a variety of translation techniques to deal with translation difficulties.Specifically, the choice of lexical meaning, amplification and conversion of word class are used to realize the lexical equivalence. At syntactic level, after summarizing the characteristics of the sentence pattern in the source text, the translator takes translation strategies into practice flexibly and pertinently, for instance, linear translation, conversion of voice, combination, division and restructuring to achieve the equivalence of sentence meaning. At discourse level, the translator uses sentence cohesion and coherence torealize equivalence of text meaning so as to fulfill the goal of smooth communication.By this translation practice, for one thing, the translator looks forward to demonstrating the applicability of Nida's functional equivalence theory with pragmatic equivalence in translation of popular science about cycling. For one thing, through this translation practice, the translator is able to introduce current conditions of cycling in the west and popularize this way of life to the Chinese readers. For another,in terms of the ability of rendering, the translator has gained translation experience, has improved the translation skills and provided a useful reference for the understanding and translation of similar popular science texts in the future.
