This translation practice,takes some chapters of American writer Hannah Tinti's latest novel The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley as the source text for translation.The novel develops with the story how the protagonist Hawley has got twelve scars,shows his love for his daughter and gives us an image of a bad guy as well as a good father.As there has been no Chinese translation of the novel up to now,the translator selects Chapter One and Chapter Two,consisting of about 11173 words which have been rendered into the translated text of 18209 Chinese characters.This report analyzes and discusses this translation project from its background,process,case analysis,etc.The translation project centers on the difficulties encountered and translation methods employed in the translation of Chapter One and Chapter Two.In the course of translation,the translator encounters difficulties on lexical and syntactic level,including(1)the translation of culture-loaded words and gun terms;(2)the translation of dialogues;(3)the translation of long sentences.In order to deal with the difficulties,the translator employs some translation strategies and methods which are illustrated with some examples.(1)Many culture-loaded words and gun terms can be translated with the help of information from related books and pictures on the Internet,the methods of adding footnotes and footnotes with illustrations are adopted to give readers the easy-to-understand Chinese versions;(2)in terms of the translation of dialogues,the translator adds modal particles and complements in Chinese version to show the personality of the characters and the expressions of emotions;(3)in addition,by changing the voices and adjusting the sentence structure,the translator can make the translation of long sentences conform to the Chinese language norms and give the target language readers the coherent and natural translation.
