A Report On The E-C Translation Of Zen Attitude(Chapters 13?15)

This is an English-Chinese translation report.The source text is a mystery novel Zen Attitude written by a British-American writer Sujata Massey.Sujata Massey enjoys good reputation for mystery novels and has won numerous awards.Now,she is still writing with persistence.The novel tells a story of an antique dealer,Rei Shimura,who bought a fake tansu at a high price,and then encountered lots of troubles.In the end,she realized that it would take strength,wit,and a Zen attitude to survive.There is no Chinese version until now.This translation report selects chapters 13 to 15 as the translation material to analyze the examples in them.This report mainly describes the translation difficulties encountered and analyzes methods adopted in the process of translation.The difficulties mainly lie in the translation of proper names,lexical figures of speech as well as complex and complex-compound sentences.The translation methods are also expounded in detail.The proper names involve those of persons and things.For the names of persons,foreignization is employed,while for the names of things,free translation with annotation is used.As for lexical figures of speech,this report mainly translates irony with literal translation and metonymy with amplification respectively.When translating the complex and complex-compound sentences,the methods,following the original syntactic order and reinventing sentence structures are applied correspondingly.It is of importance for the completion of the translation task and the writing of this report to prepare before the translation fully,understand the source text deeply and select the translation methods properly.Last,the translator hopes that this translation practice and report can introduce an excellent mystery novel to Chinese readers and offer help to other translators.If there is an opportunity,it is hoped that the translated version can be published.
