An E-C Translation Report On The Oxford Handbook Of Food,Politics And Society(Chapter Ten)

China is not only a big country with a large population,but also a big country in food consumption.However,due to the shortage of arable land,China is vulnerable to the threat of insufficient land resources in food security.Based on this situation,the tenth chapter of The Oxford Handbook of Food,Politics and Society,published by Oxford University Press in 2015,is selected as the translated text.This chapter mainly explains the food-land nexus,land reform and pro-poor land policy.And it also tells us how to make full use of limited land resources to reduce hunger and poverty.The source text of this translation practice belongs to scientific text.Both preciseness and restrictiveness are most important in scientific translation.The difficulties in scientific translation are the correct understanding of words and sentence structures,which should be the guarantee of correct and idiomatic expression of the translation.This translation practice report mainly includes five chapters:introduction,process description,translation theory,case analysis of the translation and conclusion.Among them,case analysis is the most important chapter of the translation report.It analyses the problems and difficulties in scientific translation from three aspects: comprehension,expression and adaptation and also provides the corresponding solutions.In the comprehension phase,words,phrases and sentence structures in the source text are comprehended by reading related parallel texts and looking up the dictionary;in the expression phase,the report discusses translation issues from three aspects: professional knowledge,linguistic coherent and avoiding translationese;adaptation is divided into adjustment of word order and using idioms flexibility.Through the case analysis,it was found that effective English-Chinese scientific translation requires the translator to have a rich and sound linguistic and technical knowledge of the source text,but also to be proficient in Chinese expression.It is hoped that the report may provide reference for those who are engaged in the food-land nexus and land policy research.
