With the rising international status of China, more and more people abroad pay much attention to our country. The annual Premier Press Conference after “two sessions” has become a focus of global countries because it is a window for countries around the world to know more about China’s economic and social development as well as policy trends in the future.Premier Li Keqiang answers the questions of Chinese and foreign journalists at different levels. When answering these questions,Premier Li is used to applying a lot of four-character expressions with Chinese characteristics.Chinese four-character expression,as the essence of the Chinese culture, has symmetrical rhythm and concise structure, which is favored by Chinese leaders in their speeches. However, due to the differences from grammatical structure, cultural background and way of thinking between Chinese and English, interpreters find that lots of expressions have no equivalent English expressions. Therefore, given tight time and great pressure on press conferences, interpreters must select effective interpreting strategies to deal with Chinese four-character expressions. This thesis analyzes the interpreting strategies adopted by the interpreter to deal with the four-character expressions mentioned by Premier Li in Chinese to English consecutive interpretation, which is on the basis of the Triangular Model of the Interpretive Theory, namely, comprehension, deverbalization and re-expression,and taking the Premier Li Keqiang’s Press Conference in 2021 as corpus. The author summarizes the interpreting strategies of Chinese four-character expressions on this press conference, including free interpreting, simplification, explanatory interpreting, conversion of parts of speech, amplification and omission strategies.Under the guidance of the Interpretive Theory, the above interpreting strategies are conducive to conveying the sense of the source language accurately and improving the efficiency and quality of interpretation. It is hoped that this study can provide some reference value for interpretation research on Chinese four-character expressions in the future. |
