A Study Of Communication Strategies In Chinese-english Consecutive Interpreting From The Perspective Of Gile's Effort Model

With the economic globalization,political and cultural integration,China has increasingly frequent exchanges with the rest of the world.Consecutive interpreting can provide a bridge and link for China's foreign exchanges,which has a very important position and role.Therefore,the requirements for interpreters are getting higher and higher.However,the interpreters are subject to many subjective and objective factors such as on-site pressure,which have a great impact on the quality of on-site interpretation.It is not practical to interpret all information without any missing.Communication strategies,as one of the most effective methods of language learning,can help the interpreter overcome difficulties and interpreting problems,and also facilitate language learning.Above all,communication strategies are not only a strategic competence,but also an important part of interpreting competence.Based on Gile's Effort Model,this thesis focuses on the communication strategies and takes the press conference of Foreign Minister Wang Yi as a research case of Chinese-English consecutive interpreting,analyzing the common communication strategies in interpretation.This thesis will further discuss and explore the usage of various communication strategies such as reduction strategies,holistic strategies,stalling strategies as well as mother-tongues strategies and their influence on the quality and effect of the consecutive interpreting.Thus,the interpreter will be able to better cope with the interpreting difficulties and problems researched in Gile's Effort Model,which is helpful to complete the interpreting task smoothly.Both quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis are adopted in this thesis to quantitatively analyze all kinds of special cases of communication strategies.Finally,representative cases are selected and listed,and the usages and timing of using communicative strategies are qualitatively studied in order to make the thesis sufficient and feasible.Interpretation is a kind of communicative behavior that can transform the information accurately perceived and understood by interpreters quickly from one language form to another through verbal expression,so as to achieve the purpose of instant communication and information exchange.In this dynamic communication process,the interpreters can use discourse strategies in two languages to coordinate the communication process and tackle the problems in the communication process.Therefore,the interpreters are necessary to master the theoretical and practical ability of some communication strategies to better cope with interpreting problems caused by effort imbalances and lack of linguistic knowledge.With the increasing application of interpreting communication strategies,it is hoped that the research in this thesis will promote the further development of interpretation teaching.
