A Practice Report Of C-E Consecutive Interpreting For The Symposium Between Israeli Counselor And Health And Family Planning Commission Of Liaoning Province

This practice report is based on the Chinese-English(C-E)consecutive interpreting(CI)practice for the symposium between the Commercial Counselor of the Embassy of Israel and Health and Family Planning Commission of Liaoning Province.As a part of the People's Government of Liaoning Province,Health and Family Planning Commission of Liaoning Province is mainly responsible for medical and health work of Liaoning Province.The Commercial Counselor visits Liaoning Province to know the relevant medical and health issue in Liaoning Province and to discuss the possibility of future cooperation with Health and Family Planning Commission of Liaoning Province.Consecutive interpreting requires multitask processing capacity in the limited time.In order to accomplish the task,efficient effort distribution in the whole process should be achieved.Through analyzing the whole interpreting process and the transcript afterwords,the author finds out there are some difficulties occurring due to the author's inadequate effort distribution.The Effort Model,proposed by Daniel Gile,describes various cognitive activities during the interpreting process.Therefore,the author applies Gile's Effort Model as the underlying theory of this thesis,and combines her own practice to discuss the factors causing the author's imbalanced effort distribution.The factors include: cognitive saturation,inadequate linguistic knowledge,insufficient background knowledge,and the author's not so good psychological quality under the environmental pressure.The practice report also endeavors to put forward some feasible strategies in addressing problems in each phase of interpreting regarding listening,understanding,memory and speech production.The strategies are as follows: enhancing the listening and analysis capacity through improving linguistic and extra-linguistic knowledge as well as developing the ability of logical analysis;enhancing the short-term memory capacity through combining note-taking and mind memorizing,and the information combination capacity should also be enhanced;enhancing the production capacity through using some strategies like fuzzy processing and omission in order to improve the CI quality.The author hopes that other interpreters will benefit from this thesis and they will be able to better distribute their efforts in their future CI interpreting tasks.
