The source text of this project is excerpted from Almost EVERYTHING:Notes on Hope written by Anne Lamott.Anne Lamott is acclaimed as "People's Writer".The translator finds only one of her works is translated into Chinese and decides to translate this text, aiming at providing other translators with some suggestions on translating works of Anne Lamott.According to the text typology proposed by Peter Newmark, the translator defines the source text as the combination of expressive text and vocative text, and applies semantic translation communicative translation accordingly. This research is aimed at introducing works of Lamott to Chinese readers and providing people who are suffering with hope and comfort by the translation.Besides,it is hoped that other translators can find some suggestions on translating works of Anne Lamott in this researchThis report discusses and analyzes the difficulties and problems facing the translator offers specific strategies and solutions to the problems. The translator finds difficulties at the stylistic level, textual level, and cultural level. At the stylistic level, the translator,by analyzing the differences between colloquial English and Chinese, adopts the strategies of supplementing the omitted information and distinguishing the contextual meaning from dictionary meaning. Also, the translator applies logical explicitation and shift from stative expressions to dynamic expressions to deal with the compact and high-logically structured expressions. At the textual level, the translator adopts repetition, structural reconstruction, grammatical and logical amplification, and omission to increase the cohesion and coherence of the target text.At the cultural level, the translator applies cultural amplification, annotation, imitation, and free translation.Through this project, the translator realizes that before translating a text, translators should first analyze its type and target readers,on which a good and proper translation could be completed.Furthermore, translation is the transfer of two language systems, which means translators should grasp the similarities and differences between the two systems.Last but not least, the combination of theory and practice will promote a good translation to a great extent.
