This thesis is a report on a consecutive interpreting work the author performed on October 28,2016,for China-Europe Vocational Training Center,a company in Wuhan who carries out foreign aid programs for Department of Assistance of the Ministry of Commerce of People's Republic of China and also the company the author worked as an intern.China-Europe Vocational Training Center provides seminars with different themes to officials from other developing countries. For each seminar, there are indoor lectures as well as field trips. The consecutive interpreting work in discussion was for 70 participants from the economic globalization seminar during their visit in Yangshan Deep Water Port. The speaker was Mr.Liu,a former director of Yangshan Deep Water Port. So,the speech was a brief introduction of Yangshan Deep Water Port. The field trips enable seminar participants to witness China's rapid development and to see the real China with their own eyes, attracting more attention and cooperation opportunities from all over the world. And,the communication bridge that interpreting makes can make all those beautiful things come true. This thesis is written based on the analysis of transcription of the recordings of the author's on-site interpreting. That was the very first time the author did consecutive interpreting. Therefore,a lot of problems and mistakes made their appearances in the interpreting process. There are two biggest problems.First, there is a sudden new topic. After the speaker finished the arranged topic,a brief introduction on Yanghshan Deep Water Port, when the author thought the speech was coming to an end,the speaker was so excited that he started to talk about a new topic that he had never mentioned to the author.Second, the speech is spontaneous. It is because that the speaker only preparedhis speech in his head instead of writing it down.Consequently, the speech is in free style and not well organized, adding a great amount of difficulty in grasping the true meaning of the speaker and the interpreting task.To achieve functional equivalence, capturing the true meaning of the source text or the intentional meaning is the most important. Then here comes the question: How to perceive the intentional meaning of the speaker under such circumstances and successfully interpret. This report focuses on solving that problem. With the guidance of the de-verbalization theory of the interpretive theory, the author is able to solve the problem through the usage of interpreting methods including amplification, omission and reorganization.Grasping the true or intentional meaning of the speaker is the key to successful interpreting.Analysis on such issue is of great importance to similar problems for the author, interpreters and researchers who are interested in this field.
