The project is made up of two parts. The first part is the selected section of the source text and its Chinese translation,of which the excerpt comes from the first section “International News” of the second chapter “Structure of International News” in the monograph News Analysis: Case Studies of International and national News in the Press written by Teun A.Van Dijk. The second part is a critical commentary which is centered on the analysis of the application of translation strategy and techniques on the basis of stylistic features.Five parts are included in the critical commentary, viz.the project introduction, stylistic features, theoretical description, translation strategy and techniques, and conclusion.Teun A.Van Dijk expounds the theory of structures of international and national news through a concrete case study in this monograph in which discourse analysis and media research are combined, and a link between discourse and cognition is established as well. Thus the monograph is of great academic value. The project is aimed to faithfully convey the author's academic thoughts,to reproduce the stylistic features of the source text, thus to provide a Chinese version as a reference for Chinese journalists, journalistic scholars, and even ordinary readers who are interested in journalism and linguistics.Under the guidance of Christiane Nord's theory “function plus loyalty”,the paper analyzes prominent stylistic features of the source text and applies instrumentary translation as the translation strategy and several translation techniques such as amplification, repletion and semantic adaptation.
