This critical commentary is based on the translation project of Chapter 5 and Chapter 7 of Railways in the Landscape--How they transformed the face of Britain,written by Gordon Biddle.In the excerpted texts,the writer describes the places that the railways created and the impact of contemporary railways.The source text book is a popular science reader and an informative text.Peter Newmark divides the function of texts into the expressive function,the informative function and the vocative function.In view of the translation of different types of texts,Newmark proposed theory of semantic translation and communicative translation.Communicative translation is often applied to the translation of informative text.Based on Newmark's text-typology theory and communicative translation theory,the translation of informative texts should be faithful to the original text and center on the target readers,which requires that the translation should bring the target readers the same reading effect as the original readers.The commentary has a discussion of the translation techniques employed in several examples of this translation project on the lexical level and syntactic level,such as addition,conversion,transliteration,restructuring sentences and turning the passive voice into active voice in long complex sentences,to make sure that the translation follows the Chinese expression habits and becomes more acceptable for readers.The translator hopes that this translation project will attract Chinese readers who are interested in the development of railways in Britain,and provide a reference for the impact of railway development on the future urban and rural areas in China.
