Selected E-C Translation Of Chinese Women Under The Guidance Of Peter Newmark's Translation Theory

This translation project is selected from Chinese Women,one of the short stories by Jan Lowe Shinebourne who was born in Berbice,Guyana.In the story,the author portrays racial discrimination in British Guyana colony by describing the unfair treatment of the hero,Albert,from the first point of view.The report is divided into two parts: selected translation of Chinese Women and a critical commentary on the translation project.The critical commentary consists of four sections.The first section introduces the source text and its author Jan Lowe Shinebourne as well as the significance of the project.The second section begins with the classification of text and then summarizes Peter Newmark's semantic translation and communicative translation theory.This section also explains why they are used as theoretical guidance of the translation project.The third section is about the application of Newmark's translation theory.It illustrates with examples from the translation project how various translation strategies and techniques are employed to achieve semantic and communicative translation.The last section is the conclusion,summarizing how Newmark's theory can help solve problems in translation.The short story Chinese Women belongs to British Chinese literature,which is an important branch of overseas Chinese literature and an inseparable part of English literature.In consideration of its unfamiliarity to the public,it is significant to translate this short story to attract more scholars and readers to read British Chinese literature and study its unique themes.Moreover,this project demonstrates the applicability and practicability of semantic and communicative translation theory in literary translation.
