This is a translation report on the fifth chapter of Insane: America's Criminal Treatment of Mental Illness.Alisa Roth,the writer,is a journalist who probed deep into the situation of the mental-ill prisoners in American prisons.She recorded what she had seen,heard and thought in the book,aiming at the public's attention to the mental-ills in the prisons.The translator wants to draw the concern of domestic mental-ill prisoners in prison by revealing the dark side of American prisons.At the same time,the translator hopes that the translation experience of this project can provide reference for the translation studies of similar texts in the future.This report briefly introduces the background,significance,structure of the project,the author and the main contents of the source text.Nida's functional equivalence theory is taken as the main guiding theory of translation.This report also shows the problems encountered in translation,use four translation techniques,summarizes the translation experience,and points out the problems to be resolved.
