In recent years, the international cooperation among universities all around the world is rapidly developing and China is no exception. In this case,Sino-foreign university collaboration agreement is playing a more and more important role in the process of cooperating and communicating among universities, and its translation is thus critical to the further development of those collaboration programs as well as the mutual exchange of universities in education and culture.Obviously a standard and rigorous translation of the agreement helps to protect the lawful rights and interests of the parties involved, greatly boosting the intercollegiate exchange and cooperation. As a result, there is an increasingly stringent requirement for the E-C translation of Simo-foreign collaboration agreements. However, current researches on the translation of Sino-foreign collaboration agreement is insufficient, and the theory used to guide the translation process is of no variety, which is not conductive to improving the translation of university agreement from various aspects. In this practice report, the collaboration agreements and memorandum of understanding among Fuzhou University and relevant universities in Germany,UK,.the U.S.,Italy and Russia are studied. The author selects typical cases well carrying the linguistic features of university agreement and analyzes the whole translation process through practical examples, aiming to figure out the requirements, difficulties and strategies of translating this sort of legal documents.Since Sino-foreign collaboration agreement consists of large amounts of expertise in education and law and are legally binding,it is featured by rigorous and specialized writing style, including plenty of terminologies, formal words and archaism as well as long sentences which are hard to comprehend or fixed sentence patterns commonly seen at the beginning or concluding of agreements. In order to faithfully reproduce the style of the source text, the author seeks for appropriate strategies to deal with problems encountered in translating under the instruction of Register theory proposed by a British linguist M.A.Halliday and its three elements "field, tenor and mode".As for the terminologies about education and law and formal words in the agreement, the translator tries to precisely convey the meaning of the words and at the same takes reproducing the field of the source text into consideration. After referring amounts of information, the translator makes every effort to represent the solemnness and formality of the agreement via the translation of modal verbs and archaisms.Considering that some fixed sentence patterns are commonly seen in agreements, the translator also tries to retain the.specific sentence patterns to reproduce the mode of the source text after referring to plenty of parallel texts.Since the source text is specialized-and of great importance, the translator should make plenty of pre-translation preparations and accumulate sufficient interdisciplinary knowledge as well.Apart from that, the translation theory and skills should be applied to practice in a flexible way so as to correctly and effectively convey the source text information to target readers and realize the legal effects of the target text During the translation process, the translator always keeps the register feature of university agreement in mind, and tries to reproduce the field, tenor and mode feature of the agreement and achieve the equivalence of style and function between the source and target text to the largest extent, which also proves the guidance of register theory to the translation of Sino-foreign university collaboration agreements.
