"Self-existence" is a topic that has been around us since the beginning of human birth, and it is also an important topic that thinkers have been exploring and researching since ancient times. But the thinking about the form and meaning of existence is mostly regarded as the category of philosophy or psychology.Although many artists have also depicted their personal opinions on the corresponding issues in their works, they have not closely linked the artistic and cultural factors, social factors and personal factors, and used their own brushes to think about the same propositions in the way of painting,as Western modernist artists did in the 20th century.Through the analysis of Edward Munch,Egon Schiller and George De Cherico, three artists with distinct painting styles and personal characteristics in Western modernist paintings in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this paper discusses their unique personality characteristics, different growth environments and different cultural atmosphere, respectively, under the influence of which they come into contact with the origin of life and "origin" Deep thinking on the way of "I exist".It proves that through their own practice, the three artists have turned painting into another philosophical way of thinking and expression, which makes us more clear that besides aesthetic, educational and cognitive functions in general sense, painting has a deeper purpose and pursuit. This paper attempts to make a reflective study on the basis of the existing research,so that when facing the art of painting in the contemporary context, the artists and themselves should not only confine themselves to the description and expression of the real environment and individuals, but also take the art of painting as a tool of criticizing society, but also as a way of expressing and conveying ideas,so as to make art have a deeper learning.Surgical value.
