A Practice Report On Translating The Manual For Computerized Numerical Control

With the continuous development of Chinese technology,the number of exports of Computerized Numerical Control made in China is increasing year by year.Considering that the use of large machinery and equipment requires operators to pay special attention to the precise use and safety of the instruments,as well as the maintenance of the equipment,the correct and standardized translation of the instruction manual in standard English is an important step to popularize Chinese manufacturing in the world.This is a translation practice report.The text selected for this translation practice is the instruction manual of Computerized Numerical Control produced by Machine Tool Design and Research Institute.The author firstly introduces the source of the Chinese to English translation project of "Computerized Numerical Control（Mechanical and Electrical Parts）",the background and significance of the research as well as the current situation of domestic and foreign research on the topic,and also analyzes the vocabulary,syntax and textual features of the manual.Taking the Skopos theory as the theoretical basis,the translation task is completed after carefully studying the translation skills,strategies and principles of technical English,fully integrating the translation principles of technical English.The key issue to be solved in this translation practice is to explore the translation strategies and techniques suitable for the text of Manual for Computerized Numerical Control,and to summarize the translation characteristics of the text related to mechanical operating instructions.In order to solve this problem,the author consulted relevant books and documents,used computer-aided translation software,and analyzed the most difficult parts of this practice presented by case analysis,where the lexical,syntactic and textual features of the text are described under the guidance of Skopos theory.Finally,it is concluded that the translation of the instruction manual concerned with mechanical products features refined and accurate wording,coherence and normativeness.Meanwhile,reduction,linear translation and sentence segmentation are suitable strategies and techniques here.It is hoped that this practice report can provide reference for other translators engaged in technical English translation.
