A Quantitative Study On Typicality Of Linguistic Features In HSK6 Passages Reading

This paper collects the HSK6 passages readings from 2010 to 2018 and divides the passages into six groups according to the difficulty(low and high difficulty)and style(narration,description and argumentation).All the passages were divided into low difficulty of narration,low difficulty of description,low difficulty of argumentation,high difficulty of narration,high difficulty of description,high difficulty of argumentation,.They consist of test corpus of 150 thousand words.Based on the source of these passages,we built a corpus of a million words and divided it into six groups of comparative corpus and compared the test passages with source passages to explore the typicality of HSK6 passages reading.The model adopted was composed of 74 linguistic features,which come from the research of Chinese and English language features by Biber,Feng Shengli and Zhang Zhengsheng etc,and finally determined six dimensions.We analyzed the typicality of each passages through making quantitative analysis of six dimensions of selected passages.The research results show that the selection of HSK6 passages reading is good.In the group of high difficulty passages,the narration passages with typical linguistic features account for 97.6%,the description passages with typical linguistic features account for 92.1%and the argumentation with typical linguistic features take up 87.5%.In the group of low difficulty passages,the description with typical linguistic features passages account for 88.1%and the argumentation with typical linguistic features account for 87.5%.The typicality of linguistic features of five groups selected passages above is good but some atypical ones still exist.This paper analyzes reasons of why these passages are with atypical linguistic features and suggestions for choosing better passages that fit the HSK6 test.However,the narration passages with typical linguistic features of low difficulty only account for 60%.Test paper organizer should pay attention to the selection of passages,those with significant narrative features would be better.Through quantitative analysis of the linguistic features of HSK6 passages reading,this paper provides a new validity evaluation basis for the previous HSK6 passages test and provides an objective screening plan for the corpus source of future test as well as selecting typical passages for textbooks.
