A Report On The Translation Of English For Science And Technology (EST) Under The Guidance Of Aesthetics And Translation

As the policy of opening-up is implemented deeper and deeper,technological exchanges between China and the rest of the world are expanding.Among others,English for science and technology(EST)boasts accuracy and logicality,which is generally excluded from aesthetic research lists.Nonetheless,any literary style,including EST,enjoys aesthetic value in some degree as long as it follows related norms and meets the need of communication.Taking EST for example,its beauty is mainly manifested in its standard diction,subtle syntax,clear logic and pragmatic style.The report selects The Sleep Solution:Why Your Sleep Is Broken and How to Fix It?as the analysis target with a certain scale(83,302 words).Lasting for three months,the translation project was completed by the author under the guidance of the supervisor.Given the normalization,conciseness,folksy and humorous style,the author chose aesthetics of translation to guide the practice.The report expounds the major process of the overall project,such as the source of original translation texts,preparation for the practice,as well as the process design.Starting from the essence of the translation and aesthetics-beauty of language,the thesis analyzes its beauty in preciseness,conciseness,logicality and style in several examples.The author believes that,on the basis of aesthetic perception and comprehension,the translator shall overcome semantic,structural and other obstacles.And then,the translator should understand the original text in multiple dimensions,hence,achieve aesthetic reproduction by virtue of dynamic imitation,empathy and creation.In a word,translators play a critical role in the translation products.Therefore,translators should enhance aesthetic appreciation capacity,bilingual competence and expertise in some fields.This report,studying EST from a relatively fresh perspective--aesthetics and translation,is expected to provide some reference and implications for future translation in this endeavor.
