A Report On The Translation Of The Annual Report On Artificial Intelligence(2016-2017)(Excerpt)

As China’s economy enters the “New Normal” stage and great advances have been made in domestic supply-side structural reform,the digital economy represented by artificial intelligence not only provides a vigorous internal driving force but also brings opportunities to the global economic development.The Annual Report on Artificial Intelligence(2016-2017)released by the National Research Center for Industrial Information Security Development focuses on the technical principles and major breakthroughs of artificial intelligence.The author selected one of the monographs for the translation task aiming to introduce the achievements of domestic tech giants in terms of open platforms and machine learning algorithms to relevant foreign readers and then wrote this translation report accordingly.This report is divided into five parts.The first part introduces the relevant background.The second part is the task description,which includes the source text description,target readers and purpose and significance.The third part is the process description,including pre-translation preparation and quality control.The fourth part gives the most complicated and important part of this report.The author,from the perspective of Text Typology,analyzes the specific cases from the lexical,syntactic and discoursal aspects and adopts corresponding translation strategies and translation techniques to the translation process.At the lexical level,for instance,the author adopts omission to deal with verbal category nouns in Chinese.At the syntactic level,the translation of zero-subject sentences and long sentences with multiple predicates are described,and the author mainly adopts translation techniques,such as addition,passive voice,reconstruction and combination,to deal with the syntactic problems.That makes the structure of the target text more reasonable.At the discoursal level,the author mainly achieves the coherence and internal logic of the target text through the reference and conjunction.The fifth part is the author’s summary of this report.Through this translation task and the report,the author has further mastered the proficiency in the translation strategies and skills of scientific and technological texts,so as to improve his translation competence.In view of the fact that the source text belongs to the field of artificial intelligence characterized by strong professionalism and distinctive expressions,there are still some imperfections in the individual parts of the target text,which still needs to be improved.Therefore,the author should strengthen the study in this field and further improve his translation competence.
