This is a translation report for the third chapter of Legal Translation Explained.Legal Translation Explained, which is written by Enrique Alcaraz and Brian Hughes and published by St.Jerome Publishing. This book is a scholarly work of legal translation that introduces the legal translation comprehensively and systematically from the views of linguistics, jurisprudence and translation studies. In particular, the goal of this book is to satisfy the needs of students or professional translators who are enthusiastic about legal translation and provide them with enough academic support. There are eight chapters in this book, and the author chooses the third chapter “Some Pointers to the English Legal System” as the translation material. In this chapter, the readers are able to understand the English legal system from different perspectives, such as the sources of English law,the branches of English law and some terms in English legal system.By reading and translating the third chapter, the author finds out that one of the most typical linguistic features of this book is a wide use of long sentences. In this translation report, the author describes the main difficulty of this translation material,i.e.,the translation of long sentences and illustrates how to deal with this challenging issue with various translation skills in the process of translation. The author insists that due to the differences between English and Chinese, the translation of long sentences is a noticeable difficulty and translators should pour more attention to this issue. If translators ignore the importance of long sentences, the quality of the translation will be greatly compromised. Therefore,it is extremely necessary to handle the long sentences with different translation skills such as synchronizing, reversing, cutting and conversing. This translation report is theoretically and practically significant. For one thing,to some extent,it can remove the barrier for legal translation. For another, the translation of this book has a positive enlightenment and referential meaning to China's legal system.
