It is a translation project report on the second chapter of Environmental Histories of the First World War.This chapter, which mainly talks about the key factors that determine the outcome of the First World War from a food perspective,is written by Alice Weinreb. At present, the social science works linking food and wars are very rare. Therefore, the translation of this chapter can improve China’s emphasis on food issues, strengthen the determination to grasp food security in the hands, and can avoid the outbreaks of new wars from the grain perspective. In the process of completing this translation report, the translator also developed a higher level of understanding the translation of social science texts, which has improved the translator’s own translation capability and enhanced the translator’s professional quality. This translation is guided by Newmark’s communicative translation theory and uses translation strategies and skills such as addition, conversion and division to solve the problem of information transmission between the source language and the target language. The main content of this report is divided into four chapters: description of the translation project, translation process, case study and conclusion. The first chapter introduces the translation project, including the background, objectives, and significance of the project. The second chapter is the translation process, including the translation tools used in the translation process, time schedule on the translation report and translation theory research. The third chapter is the case study and translation method.Through the presentation and analysis of the cases,it points out how to use translation skills under the guidance of communicative translation theory to solve the problem of information transmission. The fourth chapter summarizes the translator’s gains and lessons in this translation practice,as well as the guiding significance of this translation practice for the future’s study and life.
