This is a report on translation of the first chapter of Empire of Booze by Henry Jeffreys.The source text,titled “Cider,Science and Champagne”,depicts the development of British cider,historical figures who had contributed to the development of cider and the relationship between cider and champagne.Through this project,the translator learned how to use translation techniques and Componential Analysis in translation,under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory,to deal with translation difficulty.The translation also presents a way to promote Britain booze culture.The source text carries many cultural concepts which bring difficulties to the translator.In addition,how to deal with the grammatical structure of the source text in translation is a problem needed to be considered.The theoretical foundation lies in Functional Equivalence Theory and Componential Analysis in translation.Translation of cultural and lexical words is a difficulty facing the translator.This report consists of four parts.First,introduction of the project,including background,significance and structure of the project,and the demand analysis.Second,background of the source text,including the content,language features and comments on the book,and an analysis of the text based on lexical and grammatical levels.Third,an introduction to theoretical foundation,translation difficulties and translation methods used.Three translation methods were used: the selection,extending and negativeness or positiveness of a word meaning.Forth,a conclusion on translator's reflection and problems resolved.
