This thesis is a critical commentary on selected E-C translation of Chapter 5 of West of the Border:The Multicultural Literature of the Western American Frontiers. The source text of the translation mainly belongs to the informative text and it also has the feature of the expressive text. Its text characteristics are quite distinct. As the chapter head indicates, the selected text includes a lot of terms and proper nouns of conservation and anthropology.Meanwhile, its sentences are complicated in structure, most of which are long sentences hard to understand. Therefore, this translation project is finished with Peter Newmark's semantic translation theory and communicative translation theory as the guiding principle and the translator uses many translation skills such as annotation, changing the original syntactic order, conversion of part of speech and turning passive voice into active one. This critical commentary discusses several translation skills applied by the translator with examples. As for the significance of this translation project, firstly, the source text of the translation discusses the closed frontier's potential influence on American Indians and their culture,so it is hoped that this project can be helpful for Chinese readers who are interested in this theme so they can have a better understanding of that.Secondly, the translation strategies and methods used in this project are presented and analyzed in the hope that they can provide references to similar translation practices in the future.
