In addition to their historical value, the special artistic value of the inscriptions on gold and stone about imperial edicts for measurements in the Qin dynasty as well as the inscriptions on ancient counterpoises and gauges are also worthy of attention. However,in the old days,a large number of such physical objects were concentrated in the hands of a few people, and the style of unrestraint and clumsiness did not conform to the aesthetic pursuit of the mainstream at that time. Therefore, the inscriptions were not widely spread and the researches about them were not deep enough. With the increasing enrichment of newly unearthed materials and the popularization of printed materials, the contemporary and modern researches bout the inscriptions have gradually increased but most of them still stay in the theoretical aspects, such as textual criticism and calligraphy value of the characters.Calligraphers are also relatively conservative in their learning the characteristics of the inscriptions. It is even rarer for a seal engraver to make a practical attempt to engrave a seal by applying the style of these inscriptions. This article takes Zhao Zhiqian's thought of "Improving seal caving technologies by learning knowledge beyond seal"as the central idea to sort out the artistic features of the inscriptions on gold and stone about imperial edicts for measurements in the Qin dynasty by making a comparison in three aspects, namely, the background of the emergence of the inscriptions and the craftsman's mentality while making them, the influence of the chiseling process in the Qin dynasty on the texture of lines of the inscriptions, and the influence of the character evolution and the process of characters evolved into the Official Script on the configuration of the inscriptions. Then it analyzes the styles of carving imperial seal of the past dynasties,as well as several classic seal works blending with styles of Qin inscriptions of imperial edicts, thus clarifying the achievements of the predecessors in blending the styles of Qin inscriptions of imperial edicts into seals and the remaining mining space, with the aim of expanding the means of blending the styles of Qin inscriptions of imperial edicts into seals. Finally,it elaborates on the difficulties and solutions of the three elements of the seal carving, that is,calligraphy, knife skill and methodicalness, and demonstrates the feasibility, uniqueness and diversity of blending the styles of Qin inscriptions of imperial edicts into seals.
