The material of this translation project is selected from Technology,Growth and Development-An Induced Innovation Perspective by American economist Vernon W.Ruttan, which introduces the U.S.economic development in the mid and late 20th century and describes the changes of U.S.economy and their influence on American society and the world from multiple perspectives such as economy, science and technology, politics, military affairs and ecology. This translation project is based on the translation of chapter 13 and chapter 14 with 16,000 words altogether. This translation report analyzes some specific translation cases from the perspectives of words, sentences and discourses to solve the problems faced in the process of translation.Conversion of parts of speech and semantic selections are used to translate words;sequencing, division, conversion in the voices and parenthesis marks are used to translate complex and passive sentences;in order to achieve the cohesion and coherence of translation, conjunctions are used to connect two independent parts.Through participating in this translation project, the author has a deeper understanding of translation.A qualified translator should not only have a good command of both English and Chinese languages, but expand his or her horizon to master knowledge from different fields. For economic texts,a translator should be familiar with their backgrounds and characteristics and ensure the accuracy of translation of terminology through dictionaries and literature.Meanwhile,a good translator should combine the context and express the infornation in the idiomatic ways of target language.By this study, the reporter hopes to provide some advice for other related translation practices and studies.
