Difficulties In And Strategies Of Political Speech Interpreting:A Report On Interpreting Speeches Concerning International Refugee Problems On TED

Public speech is the speech delivered to the audience in public.As a part of public speech,Political speech has become an important method for government officials and public figures to give their comments and gain supports.This thesis is a report on the political speech consecutive interpreting practice.The study selects the speeches on international refugee problem on TED as the interpreting materials,and explores the difficulties and strategies of the political speech interpreting based on Gile's Effort Models and the interpreting practice of the author.The thesis consists of three parts:Introduction,main body of the thesis,and Conclusion.The introduction part introduces the research background,purpose and significance of study,research method and the layout of the thesis.Part two is divided into four chapters.In literature review,the thesis explains the political speech interpretation and its previous studies;In task review,the chapter reviews the whole process of the interpreting practice form the aspects of preparation,interpreting process and post-interpretation.The following two chapter are the core of the thesis.In the chapter of difficulty analysis,the thesis firstly gives a detailed introduction to the theoretical framework of the analysis,that is,Gile's Effort Models and Comprehension Equation;and then,it states the feasibility of applying this theory to political speech interpreting;at last,it selects some cases in the practice and analyzes the difficulties in political speech interpreting based on the two phases of the consecutive interpreting in the theory.It concludes the reception phase of source language and the production phase of target language.In the chapter of strategies,the thesis summarizes the causes of these difficulties in terms of features of political speech interpretation,bilingual competence of interpreter,and effort coordination.Also,it puts forward corresponding strategies,including the construction of knowledge network,which pays attention to the comprehension of the language text and context and values the preparation and accumulation in language knowledge and encyclopedic knowledge;the optimization of effort allocation,which attaches importance to the improvement of listening and comprehension and the practice on interpreting and note-taking coordination;and the application of proper translation strategies,including the interpreting skills and translation methods,such as syntactic linearity and supplement and explanation.At last,the thesis concludes the deficiencies in the practice and enlightenments from the study.Through the interpreting practice on the international refugee problem,the thesis minutely analyzes the interpreting obstacles in the practice and summarizes the difficulties in speech interpreting based on the effort models and comprehension equation,trying to find appropriate coping strategies.The thesis hopes to make contributions to studies on the project and serves as a reference for other interpreting scholars to enhance the interpreting competence and reach the goal of cultural communication.
