This practice report is based on the consecutive interpreting for the 101st Lecture on Political Science by Institute of China Rural Studies.The title of the lecture is"The Asian Barometer and the Comparative Study of Democratization:How East Asians React to Democratic Politics".The speaker,Professor Doh Chull Shin,is a Scholar in Residence at the Center for the Study of Democracy,University of California,Irvine.Previously he held Korea Foundation Chair at the University of Missouri,Columbia,Missouri.He is also a founding member and senior advisor of the Asian Barometer Survey project.Over the past two decades,he has conducted both empirical and theoretical research to monitor and compare the contours and dynamics of democratization.His current research focuses on democratic deconsolidation and neo-modernization theory.After the interpretation,through self-assessment,the author found three major problems:information incorrectness,information loss and disfluency during the interpreting process.Under the guidance of Gile's Comprehension Equation and Effort Model of Consecutive Interpreting,four direct causes of three major categories of interpreting problems,namely lack of background knowledge,lack of analysis in comprehension,deficiencies in note-taking and lack of active output monitoring on the quality of production were identified based on analysis of practical examples.Upon further analysis,it was found that the root cause of the interpreting problems was the author's improper effort allocation,which affected the author's interpreting performance and production quality.As such,coping strategies for improper effort allocation are proposed in this report in an attempt to reduce the three major types interpreting problems,information incorrectness,information loss and disfluency.The two strategies are sufficient preparation and effective production,which embody four methods of improvement,consistency in comprehension,coordination in note-taking,coordination between note-taking and short-term memory and adaptation in production.It is hoped that the coping strategies proposed in this report will be useful for interpreters undertaking similar interpreting tasks in the future.
