China has harvested productive trade cooperation and fruitful cultural exchanges with the deepening implementation of the “Belt and Road Initiative” and the rapid development of its economy.Motivated by China's “Going Global” strategy, numerous Chinese enterprises go abroad to win a share of the international market.Consequently, interpreters for business negotiations are in great demand and qualified interpreters could contribute to the success of business negociation. However, interpreting is an extraordinarily demanding task as interpreters may miss information without even noticing it,because they did not allocate their efforts sufficiently and appropriately during the on-site interpreting, which may profoundly affect the whole process of business negotiation. How to allocate energy appropriately is a critical issue for interpreters to fulfill the task successfully.Daniel Gile's Effort Models provide guidance for interpreters to select appropriate strategies accordingly. In accordance with Gile's Effort Models, consecutive interpreting is divided into two production phases. The first production phase includes a sound balance effort allocation of Listening and Analysis,Note-taking,Short-term Memory and Coordination that can help interpreters to reorganize the incoming information. The second production phase involves an appropriate effort allocation of Long-term Remembering,Note-reading,Production and Coordination that can help interpreters to reformulate receiving information and produce the correct target language.Gile's Comprehension Equation demonstrates the interaction among linguistic knowledge,extra-linguistic knowledge and analysis, which can reduce the barrier of comprehension and improve the interpreting performance. This report takes Gile's Effort Models as a theoretical foundation for guidance and it explores the interpreter's on-site consecutive interpreting performance at a trilateral business meeting, which was arranged by the fa?ade company with the client and the main contractor, regarding a landmark project in London,UK.The author makes an in-depth analysis of the specific examples and summarizes the difficulties encountered in the process. As the speeches were highly specialized and unpredictable, including a large number of terminologies and abbreviations in the field of the construction industry and many legal terminologies in the terms and conditions of the contract. The author managed to tackle tough issues encountered during the interpreting, such as dense information with specialized terminology, redundant speech with poor logic and fast spoken statements made with heavy accents, under the guidance of the Gile's Effort Models and Gile's Comprehension Equation. The author tried to analyze the different purposes and various concerns of the three parties regarding the same issues in their positions. The author was able to apply interpreting strategies to tackle difficulties and respond to emergencies, such as the temporary replacement of meeting agenda and the upgraded tense atmosphere of tripartite negotiations,so as to facilitate business communication.By the concrete and in-depth analysis after the meeting, from the author's point of view that a qualified interpreter should strengthen practice by applying Gile's Models, try to keep a sound balance of listening and analysis,note-taking and effort allocation and continue to accumulate encyclopedic knowledge and emergency response capabilities. The interpreter also should have the capacity to anticipate and judge the semantics of the source language, according to the tone of the speaker and on-site situation,so as to promote the smooth process of the negotiation. It is the intention of this report to provide a useful reference for interpreters who will be engaged in business negotiations in the near future.
