In September and October of 2013,President Xi Jinping put forward the initiative of jointly building the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road for the first time.Up to now, this initiative has won enormous support from more than 150 countries and international organizations,at the same time, projects and activities relating to this initiative have been springing up like mushrooms. The Nepalese Supply and Demand Docking Meeting of CICMT OBOR Trade Platform, which the author participated in January 2017,is a representative project carried out by various commercial associations from Sichuan and Nepal in response to OBOR Initiative. This project is a business negotiation,in which the author serves as an interpreter for Sichuanese and Nepalese traders.During the process of negotiation, the author notices that Chinese entrepreneurs mention culture-loaded words for a few times and deliver several long sentences, which pose a challenge for her to carry out a smooth interpretation. Therefore, this report,as a review on this specific interpreting project, will focus on the analysis of the main challenges the author comes across in this project, namely, the interpretation of culture-loaded words and long sentences under the guidance of interpretive theory. The core part of interpretive theory is the triangle model. The triangle model holds that there are three steps involved in the interpreting process: comprehension, deverbalization and reformulation.According to interpretive theory, interpreting is to explain the meaning and sense of the original text in a language sign accepted by target audiences on the basis of the interpreter's own cognitive knowledge. It has been proved by practice that the challenges concerning culture-loaded words interpretation could be solved with free interpreting, explanatory interpreting and literal interpreting, and challenges brought by long sentences interpretation can be resolved with linear interpreting, addition and omission under the guidance of interpretive theory.Compared with the interpretation of general words, the interpretation of culture-loaded words and long sentences are more high-demanding,posing a bigger challenge on the author.Culture-loaded words could be idioms, proverbs, allegorical saying, literary quotation, euphemism and so on.Such words represent things that are unique to certain cultures and are normally embodied with distinctive cultural connotations.Considering the rich cultural connotations that culture-loaded words bear, its interpretation is much more complex than that of general words. The interpretation of long sentences requires strong flexibility of the interpreter for the reason that Chinese and English are different in language structures and that they are usually intensive in information, which is very likely to cause difficulty in remembering and interpreting them correctly and completely within a short time. With the analysis of related cases arising in this project,it is concluded that selectively applying interpretive theory and theory-based methods would be helpful in improving the efficiency and accuracy of on-site interpreting. It is hoped that this report could provide references for those who lack on-site interpreting experience in dealing with similar tasks.
