A Practice Report On The E-C Translation Of Talks To Freshman Girls Under The Guidance Of Tytler’s Three Principles Of Translation

This thesis is an English-Chinese translation report.The source text is excerpted from Talks to Freshman Girls.Written by Helen Dawes Brown,this book conveys the idea that freshman girls should take full advantage of their four years college life to read some books so that personal development can be achieved.It is discussed from four aspects including the influence of reading,the content and methods of reading,the relationship between reading and writing,and the connection between reading and life.Regarding the question of whether reading is a thing of value for women,the original writer provides an answer for its readers.The source text is characterized by plain language.At the lexical level,its words are simple and unadorned,but nominal words are frequently employed.At the syntactic level,the application of attributes is common,such as two or more attributes are adopted to embellish one keyword.There are also some long or complex sentences which contains the use of clause,comparative degree and so on.Under the guidance of Alexander Fraser Tytler’s Three Principles of Translation,this practice report probes into the difficulties encountered in the process of translation and related solutions.Difficulties cover the translation of nominal words,the translation of attributes,and the translation of long or complex sentences.Nominal words are dealt with by translating into other parts of speech,or translating them into noun phrases,or sentences,or adding the agent.Fronting,splitting,omitting,and conversing are employed to the translation of attributes.Sequencing,reversing,splitting,and reconstructing are applied to the translation of long or complex sentences.This translation practice aims to arouse target readers’ reflection,especially for the college students,to study actively and read valuable books,which will exert a positive influence on their development as much as possible.In addition,the writer hopes to deepen her understanding of Alexander Fraser Tytler’s Three Principles of Translation so that she can flexibly use it in the future and further improve her analytical and translation skill through the translation of the source text,providing some useful experience for her future study.
