A Report On The Translation Of On Being A Photographer

With the development of our society,the communication and cooperation among different countries are increasing rapidly,especially the communication among the photographers or artists at home and abroad.Besides,the popularization of smart-phones with continuously improved functions,especially the pixels of smart-phones,turns more ordinary people into photo-takers.Naturally,there is a great demand for the translation of photography texts.The translation of photography texts plays a role in the transmission of know-how,bridges the communication between the photographers and artists of the East and the West.More importantly,it promotes the combination in photography and art.However,the writer's survey shows that the translation study of photography texts lags far behind the the demand for the translated books on photography.That is the motivation for the writer's translation of this book on photography.On Being a Photographer is a practical guide book co-written by two well-known photographers----Bill Jay and David Hurn.The two writers and photographers summarized their opinions and agreements on photography through their practical experiences and put forward many suggestions for photographers or image-makers to take photos of higher quality.Based on the translation of the book,the writer carefully studied the characteristics of photography texts,and conducted some researches on the translation of photographicterminology,long sentences and various types of names.Under the guidance of Tytler's“Three Principles of Translation”,the writer puts forward some corresponding solutions and strategies for the problems while translating photography texts and analyzed them in lexical,syntactical and textual level.In the process of translation,the writer mainly used literal translation,adding and omitting,following the original order and splitting a long sentence into shorter parts or sentences,and conversion,to ensure that the translation is accurate in content,with the same style and manner as that of the original and as smooth and coherent as the original text.At the end of this report,the writer summarized the experience and deficiencies of doing this project,hoping to provide a reference for the future translators of photography texts.
