This is a project report on E-C translation.The source text is selected from the The Chinese Labour Corps:The Forgotten Chinese Labourers of the First World War,written by Mark O'Neill.This book gives a detailed,historically accurate description of the experience of the Chinese labourers who worked in Europe during the First World War.Through this translation,the author put forward solutions to the difficulties arose in the translation process.And based on a general understanding of the styles and features of informative texts,the author aims to summarize the translation techniques used for this genre of texts.Through the translation of several selected parts of the source text and a consideration of the problems and solutions at hand,the translator makes a thorough analysis and summary of the source and target text.According to the Text Typology of Newmark,this text can be considered an informative text where the main objective is the accurate reproduction of information.Therefore,the translator analyzes the key and difficult points at the lexical,syntactic and textual levels of translation with consideration of the text type and in accordance with several translation theories,including the Cohesion Theory.Furthermore,the translator makes a detailed elaboration accompanied by an analysis of typical examples on difficult issues,including translation of culture-loaded words and sentences as well as cohesion at the discourse level.The methods listed herein have extended value for the practical usage.At the lexical level,the translation of culture-loaded words are intended to enhance the readability of the text.At the syntactic level,translation techniques,including sequencing and segmentation,are employed to translate long and complex sentences.At the discourse level,the cohesion and coherence of the translation is highlighted to improve readability by using various cohesive devices.Finally,by reflecting on the experience accumulated throughout the translation process,the translator puts forward suggestions which serve as a reference for the translation of informative texts.
