With the acceleration of the global economic integration,the communication between various countries has become ever more frequent.As one of the major media platforms,The Economist offers us with in-depth,first-hand information on the latest economic trends around the world.Its knowledge-intensive reference book The Economist Style Guide that advises on words preferences and grammar rules of The Economist,can greatly facilitate readers to comprehend the global politics and economy fully and correctly.Although there have been a lot of researches on Skopos Theory,among which many only focus on its guidance of advertisement,technology,literature and movie works,lacking studies on analyzing reference books from Skopos Theory's perspective.Hence,the author chooses Skopos Theory as a guidance and Chapter One of The Economist Style Guide(11th edition)which is one of the most authoritative in terms of language study for The Economist as selected material to discuss the usefulness and necessity of the translation by the analysis and studies of translation practices.This research combines the skopos theory with the author's own translation,and summarizes and analyses it from the perspective of vocabulary,syntax and translation strategies so as to probe into the feasibility of applying this theory to translation practice of knowledge-intensive reference books and to propose corresponding translation strategies.Reference books are characterized by the following features,including words with high profession and preciseness,sentences with brevity and accuracy,conditional and time clauses with high appearances.Under this circumstance,the thesis emphasizes translation purpose of the target text under the guidance of Skopos Theory.In the end,this research draws the conclusions as following:To present reference books' rigorous standard,it's necessary to standardize the rules of words'writing,meaning,usage and instance,and to ensure understanding for readers during the whole translation process,which means that,when dealing with words,the author should prudently select proper words during translation to make sure that the words' meanings are vividly and precisely,and if necessary,the collocation of words can be adjusted,and in addition,omission as well as zero translation can be applied to achieve the purpose of translation;the sentence structure and order can be adjusted to conform to Chinese logic and to express in a more idiomatic way.This research intends to summarize some translation strategies through Skopos Theory and the study of translation practice of knowledge-intensive reference books,in order to offer some suggestions and assistance for future translation of reference books.
