The paper is a translation report based on An Invented Tradition? Western Concepts of China's “Awakening”in the Early 20 th Century,which examines the causes of China's awakening from a Western perspective.The report analyses the issues arising in the translation process as well as the translation experience based on Sperber and Wilson's relevance theory.The translator first briefly introduces the translation task and the whole process of translation,which includes pre-translation preparation,in-translation and post-translation review.In the part of case analysis,which is the core content of the whole translation report,the translator introduces the framework of Comprehension,Expression and Adaptation,as well as the context,optimal relevance,ostensive-inferential process in relevance theory.Lexical,encyclopedic and logical information determine whether the translator can fully comprehend the source text.Therefore,the translator analyses the comprehension of relevance theory from these three aspects.In terms of expression,the first principle is to clearly convey the original author's potential meaning.Cohesion,coherence,context,intention and intertextuality are involved in this part.Adaptation is also necessary because of different cultural and social backgrounds.The translator analyses adaptation from the aspects of flexible addition and deletion,and word order adjustment.Finally,the translator summarizes the experience and shortcomings of this translation practice.
