E-C Translation Strategies Of Long English Sentences In Economic And Trade Texts

This thesis is based on part C of World Trade Report 2017 published by the World Economic and Trade Organization on September 27 of 2017,which focuses on the impact of technology on employment and wage.In the process of translation,three outstanding characteristics of arcane technical terms,plenty of long sentences and complex logics have been concluded.According to the statistics,there are up to 150 sentences with 30 words or more,accounting for 42.5%of the total sentences.Therefore,that how to deal with the E-C translation of long sentences becomes the focus of this thesis.In the study process of the E-C translation of long sentences,in the light of the characteristics of numerous modifiers,rich structure levels and similar logic in Chinese and English,and the E-C translation strategies of long sentences proposed by previous studies,four strategies suitable for this project,linear translation,flexible-sequence translation,split translation and comprehensive translation,are selected.Through the application of these strategies,E-C translation rules of long sentences in the task have been summarized:when the logic of the target language is basically consistent with that of the source sentence,linear translation should be adopted,which is a very economical strategy;when modifiers arenumerous,flexible-sequence translation should be applied;when the structure level is rich,split translation should be adopted;What's more,When English sentences are extremely complex,in order to make the translation more authentic,comprehensive translation should be applied.There is no Chinese translation of World Trade Report 2017 so far.Although the translation done by the author needs to be further strengthened and improved,the practical results of this paper and the analysis of the E-C translation of long sentences not only provide a reference for Chinese readers,but also give some ideas for the translation of similar texts.
