| The increasingly influential Belt and Road Initiative brings about striking development in the internationalization of engineering cooperation.Correspondingly,the engineering translation market continues to expand.In that case,translators are basically required to convert foreign documents into Chinese versions with accuracy,objectivity and logic so that both Chinese and foreign parties can grasp the document information exactly and communicate smoothly.The author participated in the translation of engineering documents for the construction of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge-Hong Kong Link Road-Section between HKSAR Boundary and Scenic Hill,a translation project undertaken by the translation company called Linguist Translation Services.Based on the practice,the Method Statement for Marine Bored Pile Works with RCD is selected as the material for this report where the summary on characteristics of the engineering text,the description of problems arising in the English-Chinese translation and the analysis of corresponding solutions are expected to be given.Engineering texts are scientific pragmatic texts featuring objectivity,accuracy,succinctness and rigorous logic in language.In that case,engineering translation bears the higher requirement.Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory holds that translators’ concerns in translation should focus on feelings and responses of the target readers.It suggests that translator should seek the dynamic equivalence between the source language and the target language in meaning and style of the text.On the basis of this translation theory,the report is to analyze the various problems with specific examples in translating alphabetic acronyms,long and complicated sentences,passive voice sentences and elliptical sentences,then the corresponding solutions are adopted including such translation techniques as zero translation,splitting,restructuring,conversion and addition.By using these methods,a better translation result is achieved.This translation practice makes the translator aware of the value of the Functional Equivalence Theory in guiding the engineering text translation.Accordingly,efforts will be made to strengthen the combination of theory and practice continuously in future learning and exploration.Through the analysis and summary of this translation practice,the author gains a deeper insight into engineering translation,and it is expected that this report can provide a good reference for such translation practice in the future. |
