With the process of globalization,a large number of foreign films and videos are introduced into China.Subtitle translation has inevitably become a necessary and heavy task for the Chinese translators. In some foreign countries, subtitle translation studies and subtitle norms are relatively mature. However, subtitle translation in China is still in the primary stage with no practical methodologies and norms for reference. Both opportunities and challenges coexist in the subtitle translation study. This is a subtitle translation report.Given by the author's company—Base Academy, the project was to add Chinese subtitles to a video tutorial named Get Started with Photoshop.By reviewing the whole subtitling process, the author analyzed the difficulties in English to Chinese subtitle translation.According to Relevance Theory, subtitle translation is a dual “ostension-inference” process. For readers, they would like to spend less effort and achieve optimal relevance.Reading the full translation while watching videos and listening to the sound would increase burden for audiences. Therefore,it is unnecessary for subtitle translators to fully translate the original script. With the assistance of voiceover and images in the video, condensation and omission would be advisable in the translating process. After project review and case study, the author sums up some condensation techniques for subtitle translation, including generalizing the enumerating, using abbreviations or acronyms to replace special English words, simplifying complex sentences, omitting known information or using pronouns to replace it and simplifying verbal periphrases. The author summarized the techniques above, hoping that they can be helpful to other subtitle translators.
