A Report On English-Chinese Translation Of The Chinese Taste In Eighteenth-century England(Excerpts)

Under the background of globalization,cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries have greatly pushed forward the development of Overseas Promotion of Chinese Culture.At the same time,in order to explore the dissemination and influence of Chinese culture,Chinese scholars have paid more attention to Chinese studies abroad.As a result,the translation of Sinological works has become more and more important.This report aims at analyzing the translation of Chapter 8 of The Chinese Taste in Eighteenth-Century England,which mainly introduces British sinologist Thomas Percy's study on China in the eighteenth century and the influence of Chinese culture on Romanticism.And guided by Snell-Hornby's Integrated Approach to translation,this report analyzes the difficulties encountered in the process of translation and summarizes corresponding translation strategies and methods.This translation practice report is mainly divided into four parts.Part one summarizes the background and significance of the translation task,the content and characteristics of the translation text,and the Integrated Approach and its guiding role in the process of translation.Part two gives a detailed introduction to the whole translation process,including preparations,mid-term translation and post-proofreading.It also makes an analysis and summary of the difficulties encountered in the translation process.Part three is the core part of this report,which includes specific translation cases and corresponding translation methods.Under the guidance of the Integrated Approach,the translator firstly applies the method of extension to accurately translate words and the method of annotation to add related background information;secondly,uses the “scene-frame” method to sort out the logic of long sentences and reorganize its information;and finally uses the strategy of back translation to improve the translation of sinological texts.In the last part,the translator reviews the process of translation and summarizes the experience,inspiration and shortcomings of this translation practice.The significance of this translation practice is mainly embodied in the following three aspects.Firstly,the translated text introduces the exchange and development of Chinese and English cultures in the eighteenth century,which will help Chinese readers to understand the influence of early Chinese culture on British society.Secondly,the translated text shows the history of Chinese culture's spread and development in other countries,which will be conducive to Chinese scholars to find more ways to push forward the Promotion of Chinese Culture.Lastly,the translator applies the theory of Integrated Approach to the translation of sinological works and explores effective translation techniques through typical cases,which will provide theoretical ideas and reference information for the translation of similar texts.
