This thesis reports an English-Chinese translation of Chapter Three, At the End of Life in Contemporary Bioethics: A Reader with Cases, a book co-edited by Jessica Pierce and George Randels. Chapter Three of the bookgives the writer’s reflection on life and presents several controversial issues at the end of life, including the definition of death, physician-assisted suicide(PSA) and proxy decision in the case of medical futility. The whole translation is guided by “An Integrated Approach” put forward by Snell Hornby.Under the guidance of the “Integrated Approach”, the author first determines the text type and the corresponding translation standards. Then, an overall analysis is made of linguistic characteristics of the original text(medical text and philosophical text mainly), including the characteristics of vocabulary, syntax and paragraph, which is helpful for the author to locate the difficulties in translation and to find out the best translation strategies possible. The in-depth analysis reveals that the language in the source text is professional, logical and functional, and thus, the target text is expected to be professional, local and functional in language as well. This thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter describes the task. It introduces the project background and theory basis as the guidance of the whole thesis. The second chapter elaborates on the characteristics of interdisciplinary texts, especially those of the selected texts, in terms of vocabulary, syntax and paragraph. The third chapter mainly focuses on the translation process and difficulties in translation. The fourth chapter provides examples and illustrates how the difficulties in translation are solved under the guidance of the integrated approach. The final chapter draws the conclusions of this translation project and offers suggestions for further study.
