On The English Translation Of Chinese Patent Applications From The Perspective Of Functionalist Theory

Patent applications translation not only decides whether enterprises couldsuccessfully get granted of their patents in foreign countries but also affects theirimprovement of images and international competitiveness. In view of the poor qualityof the present English translation of Chinese patent applications, the thesis tries towork out the standards and methods of Chinese patent applications translation on thebasis of texts analysis from the perspective of functionalist theory. Firstly, the thesiscollects60examined patent applications by the patent authority of the same patent (30in Chinese and30in English) based on which it makes text analysis under theguidance of Functional approaches. Secondly, based on the Functionalist approachesespecially the Text Typology theory and Skopostheorie, the text type, the function andtranslation purpose of Chinese patent applications are defined. Finally, the thesis putsforward the standards, method and skills in English translation of Chinese patentapplications. The thesis expects to compensate for the drawbacks of the pre-existingstudies and promote the development of researches on Chinese patent applicationstranslation.
