A Report On Translation Of Analysis Method Of Drug Residues Based On DHFR

Patent text integrates technical,economic and legal information and possesses relatively fixed writing format and expression,which belongs to informative text.The source text of this translation practice is an authorized Chinese patent by the National Intellectual Property Administration in China in 2020,named Analysis Method of Drug Residues Based on DHFR.This Chinese patent is entrusted by Beijing Shengxun Group and required to be translated into English to apply for innovation patent authorization in Australia in 2021.The translator translates the patent in the semantic translation and communicative translation mode under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s text typology theory.Under the guidance of the theory,some translation strategies and methods of the patent text from lexical,syntactic and textual levels are analyzed in the report.At the lexical level,literal translation and free translation are used to translate technical terms.The translator also refers to professional dictionaries to ensure the accuracy of lexical translation.At the syntactic level,adjustment of words order,amplification and literal translation are mainly used to analyze the translation of common sentence patterns in patent texts.In this way,the translator properly translates the large number of sentences without subjects,imperative sentences and sentences that are too concise and difficult to understand in patent texts.At the textual level,amplification is used to increase the cohesion of the target text.Meanwhile,omission is adopted to translate repetitive words and sentences in patents,which improves conciseness and logicality of the target text.This translation practice shows that Newmark’s text typology theory could perform guidance on the translation of informative texts,especially highly specialized patents.The translator finds that determining the text type of the source text first,and then selecting the appropriate translation methods can improve the speed and quality of translation.And hopefully,the translation methods and skills in this report can provide some references for the translation of patent texts in the field of drug residue detection in the future.
