This thesis studies the radicals of Chinese character and their instructional designs.Since the end of last century,scholars have unremittingly explored the question of radical and applied the radical to the teaching Chinese as a second language.But most study mainly aimed at domestic foreign students who have already learned Mandarin for a long time.This paper divides the radical into two parts: the internal phonetic-ideographic relationship and the external position structure.The internal part explains the characteristics of phonetic and ideographic radical.The external position structure includes the left and right,the top and bottom,closed and frame structure.This paper is based on the 658 compound characters in class A word of the Classification of Syllable,Characters and Words of Chinese International Education.According to the statistics,a total of 4 instructional designs were designed,which are aimed at New Zealand primary school students(average age 12 years old).
