The original text of this translation report is selected from Methodology of western translation studies: since the 1970 s published by Peking University Press in2005.The book consists of nine chapters that contain the introduction of Western translation schools and the review of classic works and theories. The discussion covers translation strategies and their evolution from the Antiquity period to the Modern era.Its detailed footnotes and supplementary bibliographies play a guiding role for readers who want to further explore Western translation theories. They are also instructive to translation practitioners and theoretical enthusiasts at a certain level. There is currently no Chinese translation of this book. The translation group of five postgraduates have conducted the translation project. The report includes the first chapter of the book and the first half of the second chapter illustrating Western translation studies before the 1970 s and Linguistics oriented approaches to translation studies. The report is about 18,000 words.Under the guidance of Peter Newmark's text typology theory, the translator deems that the original text is dominated by informative texts with occasional expressive texts. Therefore, communicative translation strategy is adopted with semantic translation as a supplement. The translator categorized four levels for case analysis which are lexical, syntactic, discourse and cultural. In terms of lexical level, the paper analyzes cases of choice of word meaning and conversion. The syntax part discusses the use of the translation method such as division, restructure and voice conversion. The discourse level discusses aspects on discourse coherence. The cultural level focuses on the understanding, analysis and translation of cultural loaded words.
