The research object of this thesis is the interpersonal relationship between the protagonist Strickland and the different characters in the famous moon writer Maugham’s“The Moon and Six Pence”.Starting from Sartre’s existentialism perspective and analyzing how the protagonist’s “self” and “the others” are inextricably linked, and how to cut off contact with “the others” and achieve the pursuit of the protagonist’s the realm of personal spiritual supremacy. The difficulty of this topic is how to use Sartre’s existentialism to dig out the contradictions in Strickland’s human nature, and to analyze the relationship between “self”and “other”.The first part mainly explains the four directions of Sartre’s existentialism: “existence before essence”,“world is absurd”,“free choice” and “the hell is others” and use these four directions to analyze the causes of character and the impact on interpersonal relationships. The second part analyzes the character of each character in the novel and the different pursuits of reality and spirit, including Strickland,Ms.Strickland,Stroeve,Blanche and Ata.The analysis of personality characteristics can interpret their interpersonal relationship and how it was produced. The third part mainly analyzes how the relationship between the protagonist Strickland and Strickland,Mrs.Strickland,Stroeve,Blanche, and Ata are unfolded and how to end.Comparing the second part of the analysis of existentialism,it can further reflect the different pursuits of the characters in the novel for the reality and the spiritual level, and how they deal with the contradiction between the reality and the opposite of the spirit. The final part of the conclusion can be found through the exploration of the protagonist Strickland’s “self” and “other” interpersonal relationship,it can find the real contradiction point of each character, the influence of the social ideology on the protagonist’s inner contradictions. After analyzing different interpersonal relationships between the “self” and “others” of each character,it can gain an in-depth understanding of Sartre’s existentialism’s interpretation of the actual individual existence and spiritual pursuit, and how existentialism helps the character to face the inner anxiety and pain.
