A Report On The Translation Of Penguins:Natural History And Conservation (Chapter ?)

The material of this report is selected from chapter III of Penguins: Natural History and Conservation,which was published by University of Washington Press in 2015.This chapter mainly introduces yellow-eyed penguin's common and scientific names,description,taxonomic status and etc.It is a typical text of popular science with many professional and technical words and expressions.Meanwhile,this text also contains some appealing and literary expressions.These features combined pose some challenges to the translation and also are the highlights of this report.This report summarizes the difficulties of the original text at lexical and syntactic level.At lexical level,it features with many professional and technical words and expressions as animal names,body parts,proper nouns in biology and geography and etc.At syntactic level,it consists of multiple passive structures and long and complicated sentences.Based on the theory of Nida's dynamic equivalence,this report applies flexible translation strategies as literal translation and free translation and methods as annotation,amplification,division and adjustment in translation in order to maintain the professional,accurate features of the original text by finding the “closest natural equivalent” of the source language over the equivalent of forms.At the same time,the report expects to make the translation more appealing and literary for a high degree of equivalent of receptor's response.This translation practice report summarizes translation strategies and methods for similar text,providing reference and guidance for text of popular science.
