A Report On E-C Translation Of Business Contract English Under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory

Since the reform and opening up,China has begun to have frequent business activities with other countries around the world.And business contracts are widely used in establishing business relations.The ultimate purpose of business contract translation is to help parties involved know about specific provisions of contracts,thus provide a certain reference for readers concerned.Hence the translation of business contracts greatly ensures smooth operation of foreign trade for China.The translation material,MARINE PROJECT CARGO SLIP RISK DETAILS obtained from Jiangsu Engineering Translation Incorporation,is mainly about marine cargo insurance.Based on the definite purpose of contracts translation,skopos theory is adopted as the guidance of translation.Guided by three rules of skopos theory,the author took full account of target readers and mainly analyzed the material from lexical and syntactic levels.On the one hand,in lexical level,fidelity rule and skopos rule are applied to analyze the formal terms,archaic words,as well as modal verb “shall”.And following translating methods are concluded based on large amount of practices: formulated and literal translation to formal terms,omission and literal translation to archaic words,literal translation,reconstruction and adaptation to mandatory modal verbs.On the other,in syntactic level,coherence rule is applied to the translation of conditional adverbial clauses.And finally the combination of omission and literal translation is found to be the most effective method in dealing with conditional adverbial sentences.Therefore,translation methods are generalized from E-C translation of business contracts under the guidance of skopos theory.And the report hopes to provide references for translation of business contracts.
