A Practical Analysis Report On The Translation Of Business Contracts From The Perspective Of The Skopos Theory

In the background of the development of economic integration,China,with her rapid development,especially after the launching of her opening-up policy,and her entry into WTO,has witnessed a significant boost in business transactions with foreign countries.Inevitably,business contract translation is becoming increasingly important hence it attracts more attention from the academic and research institutes,other than attentions from those professional entities.However,when the author was working on his internship in an international company,he noticed that many business contracts were not in good or precise translation and the mistakes made in those business contracts engendered the loss of revenue and left the room for the potential risks to occur.Therefore,this motivated the author to explore the business contract translation more.During the translation,with the author's previous translation experience in applied translation,compared with other kinds of translation theories,the author determined to employ the Skopos theory to guide his translation conduct.The Skopos theory holds that the purpose of translation is the supreme and should always be given priority to,which means it's different from the traditional bottom-top translation method,but it holds the top-bottom method.In other words,the ends justify the means.The translators are allowed to choose the most suitable strategies according to the translation assignment,as long as the translation purpose can be achieved.What's more,the three rules of the Skopos theory,namely the Skopos rule,the coherence rule and the loyalty rule,also offer the translators a clear view to accomplish qualified translation.The Skopos theory is highly welcome in areas of applied translation like advertisement translation,instruction translation and subtitle translation and so on.Business contract translation is also an important branch of applied translation and many researches of it have been done from the perspective of the Skopos theory.This report,with the help of previous studies,takes the translation practice of three business contracts of Hongfa Group in Xiamen as the research sample(one E-C Sales & Purchase Contract,one C-E Joint Venture Contract and one C-E Sales & Purchase Contract).It presents the three separate periods of the translation process and then shows,using typical cases,how translation is carried out under the three rules of the Skopos theory.In short,the current report further proves the great guidance of the Skopos theory in business contract translation,theoretically and practically.The author sincerely hopes that this particular report can provide analytical and translational inspiration for future researcher or professional practitioners in business contract translation.
