A Report On Translation Of Construction Contract From The Perspective Of Communicative Translation Theory

This report is based on a construction contract between a foreign company and a Chinese construction company.It provides discussions on the solutions to informative function text from the perspective of Communicative Translation Theory.The contract is about the construction of coal mine auxiliary shaft and air shaft.The main part of the contract involves overview,technical matters and liabilities,stipulates the responsibilities and obligations of both the employer and the constructor during the performance of the construction,the project design and so on.It is a legally binding contract.This report analyzes the characteristics of the source text.According to Newmark's text analysis theory,the source text is an informative text.Its characteristics reflect two levels which are lexical and syntactic levels.On the lexical level,the source text uses plenty of coordinating synonyms,archaic terms,modal words and specialized engineering terms.They are translated according to the standardization of terms.On the syntactic level,the source text contains many declarative sentences,passive sentences and long sentences.The key point of the report is the statement of the translation strategies used under the guidance of the communicative translation theory.The translation of the sentences is a big difficulty in the translation process,and the author mainly adopts translation strategies of division and combination to translate declarative sentences and long sentences;and applies conversion method to translate passive sentences.It can be concluded that the application of communicative translation theory in the contract is feasible.
