Explicitation, recognized as increased explicitness of a target text as compared to its original text,is one of the most frequent and thoroughly studied phenomenon in interpreting and translation studies. The phenomenon of explicitation has attracted a lot of researchers to study it,especially in translation and simultaneous interpreting. In this report, the author analyzes her own consecutive interpreting output based on the results of Gumul's research in 2006.This report mainly discusses an interpreting practice conducted in a class given by former GSA assistant administrator about standards inside the American federal government.Based on related studies conducted by previous researchers, the author clarifies the definition, motivations, and types of explicitation. She adopts Gumul's 12 types of explicitation as the theoretical basis of this paper. After analyzing the author's own interpreting practice, she concludes four major types of explicitation in her production. They are adding connectives, adding a proper name to a generic name, replacement of nominalizations with verb phrases and including additional explanatory remark. In the case analysis, the author analyzes the explicitating shifts used, the way interpreter adopted them, the reason and benefits of using these 4 certain types of explicitation. The author also points out unsuccessful practices. Finally, the author concludes major strategies in explicitation and their benefits.
